Winkie and Penny's Story

The Elephant Sanctuary

Here's your chance to help Winkie enjoy her new life at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN. Soon, Winkie will be moved in a specially-equipped trailer from the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI, where she has been chained for 2/3 of her 35-year life, to a 222-acre natural-habitat refuge.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the thousands of people in and around Dane County, and around the country and the world, who spoke up on behalf of Winkie and Penny, a 20-year-old African elephant who lived at Vilas with Winkie. Thanks to all of you, Penny will soon be living in a large, modern facility with greenery and other African elephants like her, and Winkie will join six other Asians at her new home in Tennessee.

But Winkie can still use your help. An endowment has been established that will, on the interest alone, provide for her ongoing upkeep. Please join the students at Wingra School and other community members in providing for Winkie's future.
